Two new members of the Oscillation Laboratory joined the station in 1952— R. L. Sorochenko and V. A. Udal’tsov. 5-m antenna to enable observations of the Moon as well as the Sun at 10 cm. These measurements provided data about the daytime and nighttime refraction in the atmosphere, and also about the radio emission of the Moon itself. As early as 1951, Vitkevich proposed the idea of investigating the solar corona by analysing radiation of the Crab Nebula source that had passed through the coronal material, when this source was located at various angular distances from the centre of the Sun.
