Following Rowson’s example, Hannah Webster Foster published The Coquette in 1797. It, too, is a sentimental novel that was made up of 74 letters telling the story of a spirited young woman who makes a serious mistake that leads to her demise. It also was a best seller and with Charlotte Temple is one of the two most successful novels in the United States before 1800.
