Zedlitz was the most powerful advocate of the Enlightenment in the Prussian Government, and was in his post from 1771 until replaced by the anti-Enlightenment Wöllner in 1788, two years after the death of Frederick I. His income from teaching was not high, and even so he would often excuse poorer students their fees, while the income from his publications was inconsiderable.
According to an inventory taken after his death, Kant owned 450 unbound volumes, most of them the gifts of publishers and not held in particular esteem by their owner. 59 The history of Kant's publishing enterprise shows a steady development from his addressing first a local, then a national and ultimately an international audience. His philosophy was known and taught in the universities and, as his correspondence testifies, was familiar to and esteemed by those excluded from the university such as women.
